Queen Mother

The Queen Mother was the 9th child out of 10.
The Queen Mother was born 4th August 1900.
Her father couldn't get to register her birth until 6 weeks after her birth. When he did he said she had been born at the family home in St Paul's Walden Bury in Hertfordshire.
But now some people think she was born in London.

She was educated at home by a governess. She missed a lot of her education because of World War I.
Her brother Fergus was killed in the battle of Loos.
Another of her brother Michael was kept a prisoner for two years.
Amazingly she could speak French fluently at the age of 10 even though she missed a lot of school because of the war.

Prince Albert who was soon going to be King George VI first met the Queen Mother at a birthday party when she was 5.
15 years later they met again. Prince Albert was shy but he was determined to marry the Queen Mother. She finally accepted his 3rd proposal when they were walking through the woods near her home.Their engagement was announced January 1923.They were married at Westminster Abbey.
They had two daughters Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret.

Albert's brother King Edward VIII gave up his throne so that he could marry Mrs Wallis Simpson. The next person to the throne was Albert. Albert wasn't to keen on being king but in the end he was crowned King George VI at Westminster Abbey.

World War II happened next. The Queen Mother and her two daughters were advised to leave but the Queen said that she would not leave without the King and the King shall never leave.
So she got taught about using a revolver and practiced in the palace garden.
In the end Bucking ham palace got bombed but the Queen Mother, King George VI, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret were not harmed.
It happened to be that the Queen Mother felt closer to the people of London after she had been bombed.
"I'm glad we've been bombed. It makes me feel I can look the East End in the face," said Queen Elizabeth.

King George VI reigned quite well when the Queen was there but when the Queen was not there to help him he would go back to being his shy and awkward self again.
All this ended when King George VI died in 1952.
The Queen blamed it on her brother in-law Edward (who gave up his throne to be with Miss Simpson.)
King George died from cancer.
Princess Elizabeth then took over and was crowned Queen. The Queen was very sad that her husband had died.

The Queen then helped her grandchildren to grow and she also helped to arrange their weddings.
She died in 2002 in her sleep. She died of old age.
She was one of the best queens the people had.
